Throwback memory: Afternoon drive in the 1973 Datsun 510 1600SSS rally car

Updated: 23 hours ago

Two years have passed, yet the memory of that great afternoon remains vividly etched in my mind. The rural dirt roads of one of Lisbons wine district’s, the dusty trail, and a trusty companion to drive – the 1973 Datsun 510 1600SSS rally car,  ready for adventure. And we weren’t alone; my friend Miguel Velasco (@miguelvelascopc) rode shotgun, camera in hand, capturing the essence of this escapade.

As I slipped behind the wheel, the vintage leather bucket seat embraced me like an old friend, I felt a rush of excitement. As I turned the ignition key and pressed the start button, the engine roared to life, its inline-four cylinder song echoing through the countryside. I shifted into gear, and we began this joyful dance through the dirt roads. Miguel sat beside me with his trusted Leica camera in hand, snapping photos as we navigated the twists and turns.

The rural landscape unfolded before us like a canvas of emerald greens and earthy browns. The air was filled with the scent of dry soil and wildflowers. Every bump, every curve, and every dip in the road was met with precision and agility by the 510. Its suspension absorbed the shocks, and its rear-wheel drive layout imbued every maneuver with a sense of playfulness, leaving behind us a trail of dust.

As we drove, the world seemed to slow down. The gentle breeze blowing in our faces, and the sound of gravel crunching beneath the tires created a soothing melody. Miguel's camera clicked away, capturing the laughter, the thrill, and the beauty of the moment. I felt at one with the car, the road, and nature. Every shift in gear, every press of the accelerator, putting the Datsun into controlled slide, and every gentle application of the brakes was a harmonious dialogue between man and machine.

The rhythmic motion of the drive lulled us into a state of flow, where time lost all meaning. Our excitement was palpable. I noticed Miguel’s eyes shining with joy as he captured the “perfect” shot. I felt alive, connected to the moment, and utterly free.

Looking back through the set of photos Miguel shot that day, I'm transported back to the thrill of that drive. Each image tells a story – of laughter, adventure, and the unbreakable bond between friends, doing what they love the most, and the machine. The 1973 Datsun 510 1600SSS had become more than just a car; it was our partner in adventure, our confidant, and our key to unlocking the beauty of the world.

That afternoon remains a cherished memory, a testament to the power of friendship and the thrill of driving unpaved roads. Miguel's photos serve as a reminder of the joy that lies in simplicity, the beauty of the unknown, and the adventure that awaits around every bend.
